CNES’s new Google+ page is a key plank of the social web media strategy the agency has been building for several years now. CNES made its first foray into the social media sphere in 2008 with a news feed on Facebook, soon complemented by Twitter and various one-off operations on other platforms.
In the last two years it has forged close ties with a community of space bloggers united by their passion for space all over Europe. This community of bloggers and ‘tweeps’ regularly gets together for events around Ariane 5 launches, microgravity flights or science cafés.
Google+ will serve to reach out to a wider international audience and put together joint projects with this community. But the Google+ page also seeks to federate other communities with an interest in space around themes like the environment or new technologies.
For the Paris Air Show, CNES is organizing a series of topical Google+ hangouts where five bloggers will be invited to join video chat sessions on Google+ and submit their questions to the agency’s experts
These hangouts are being organized with support from the science social network MyScienceWork and Ciel&Espace magazine.
